Music for documentary:

Why music in documentaries has to be the right one.
Because it takes viewers to new places and back through time.
With music for documentaries, journeys through time are possible! Just a few notes are enough to transport us to 1920s Berlin, 70s disco fever in NYC, or the imagined future of a Mars colony. Documentary film music also helps with journeys through space, transporting us to other cultures and places. Empathic and appropriate music brings us closer to the thoughts and feelings of the protagonists.
Music has a special power, especially in combination with images. Music in documentaries is therefore a sensitive matter, as documentary formats strive to depict reality faithfully. And the dramatic accompaniment of a soundtrack is extremely rare in real life. On the other hand, films lasting 30, 45, 60, 90, or even 120 minutes are difficult for most viewers to digest without music. A combination of diegetic source music, a classic film score, and the deliberate use of silence at selected moments is often recommended.
Because every documentary film requires different music.
There are numerous sub-genres in documentary film, for example:
Nature film, animal film
Historical documentary
Reportage
Docudrama
Mockumentary
Interview series
Different genres and target audiences place different demands on the music. And every protagonist, every story, every world being documented is naturally different! Therefore, every project begins with a detailed music discussion. Through dialogue, the appropriate acoustic approach is “felt” and “conceived,” and a concrete plan for implementation within the budget is developed.
The film score of a documentary can also, similar to fictional formats, work on motifs and themes to musically follow the common thread of the documentary. A positive side effect is the recognizability of the music, and thus of the film, for the viewer, for example, in documentary series. This helps viewers remember stories and protagonists and important human, historical, or animal themes for a long time to come.

The Sound
of Filmmusik
Music is an influential tool in film; sometimes music is even referred to as the “queen of the arts.” Therefore, its use as film music should be handled subtly, especially in documentary formats. The reason for this? The connection between people and music is often even more direct than with other media (e.g., text, images, video). Music evokes emotions, triggers memories, and reaches the listener on a subconscious level. Well-crafted music can also instantly establish certain eras, places, and references. Similar to the use of music in advertising, music for documentaries can even be used to very precisely address specific age groups, social classes, and interest groups. Well-written, individual music connects protagonists, actions, and messages with the emotional and mental world of the viewer, immersing them for 15, 30, 45, 90, or even 120 minutes.
Why is silence sometimes better than music?
Let’s imagine a documentary with powerful images, a moving story, and a successful execution. But then, after a while, the music disrupts the overall impression. And to the film professional, it even seems somehow familiar. Because it doesn’t sound original, but rather cheap (royalty-free) archive music that has already been used in countless other projects. This doesn’t do oneself any favors, because music in documentaries has to “hit the right note” very precisely and simply can’t sound “cheap,” otherwise the viewer’s hand will quickly be back on the remote control or mouse. Good documentary music, just like an unobtrusive film score, is an important element in the overall work, but often more tangible than audible. The stage belongs to the protagonists and the visual scenery. Sometimes, especially with sensitive topics, it’s even better to let the images speak for themselves in silence, without any music at all. Alternating music and silence intensify the rhythm of any documentary narrative.
