How film music is created | In exchange and process
Preparation
- Preliminary discussion(s) with the director, producer, editor and/or editorial team: Determine the creative framework for the film music. The earlier the exchange begins, the better.
- Cueing, spotting and dramaturgical concept: finding the common musical denominator.
Concept
- Music in film and film music: How autonomous should the music be?
- Does the use of diegetic or non-diegetic music make more sense? Or does only a combination of both work?
- At what points should the music come into its own, and when should it remain silent?
Composition
- Film music is created: from the tempo track to the musical idea to the final layout. Tempo and rhythm are particularly crucial.
- Has the desired emotional effect already been achieved or are adjustments necessary?
- The perfect moment: image and music merge in a scene to create something never seen before. And, suddenly the image speaks volumes.
Realization
- Selection of musicians and preparation of studio recordings: Only music recorded live speaks through depth and liveliness.
- Capturing magical moments: In the studio with musicians, singers and orchestras.
- The master tape for the film mix: film music in the context of dialog and sound design.
My task as a film composer: "And, suddenly the image speaks volumes"
Film music and moving images are the oldest “love story” of film, as films were accompanied by live music even in the early days. Well composed, image and music merge into an indissoluble unity and are much more than the sum of their audiovisual parts. They get under your skin, they touch, beguile, seduce, enchant or disturb and allow us as viewers to discover new worlds.As a film composer, I am a musical consultant and sound designer in one: What effect should the film music have? What tempo should be chosen? Which style and instruments suit the picture? My aim is always to find new sounds that fit the movie perfectly, and my in-depth knowledge of the possibilities of music helps me to do this.I love working with filmmakers, studio musicians and professional singers as much as I love the music. As a film composer, music is the most important part of my life. I have been playing the piano since I was four years old and started composing at the age of five. Today, I mainly write music for moving pictures, as well as orchestral works and theater music. After several years in Munich and Hamburg, I have been living and working in the fast-growing media city of Leipzig since 2014. For larger and more elaborate productions, I can also work directly at your location, for example in Munich, Berlin, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart or Ludwigsburg.
My aim is to constantly find new sounds that do justice to the specific film work, merge with characters, storylines, dramaturgy and history to form a new unity and enter into an inseparable relationship with the moving image, whereby I am just as proficient in dealing with many instruments and all common composition programs as I am in composing multi-layered orchestral works, quite classically with pencil and music paper. As a film composer and graduate of the Ludwigsburg Film Academy, I am a member of GEMA and the Composers Club.

As a film composer, I live for music and know it in all its subtleties, in all its breadth and depth. Instruments, tempo, styles, the development of film music since the first moving images were created, as well as the many different ways in which music can be composed to accompany images, form a wealth of knowledge that I can use to provide you with comprehensive advice before or during filming. As an artist, music is my elixir of life. I tried my hand at the piano at the age of four and wrote my first composition at the age of five. My passion for music is no coincidence, as I grew up in a family of musicians. My father, Željko Pešek, played in the orchestra of the Deutsche Oper am Rhein in Düsseldorf and Duisburg for a long time. Together with him, my mother, Ursula Pešek, is active in the research and publication of musical and musicological works. My younger brother, Jonathan Pešek, studied violoncello at the Hochschule für Musik in Basel and works as a cellist and lecturer, and my intensive involvement with music led me to an intermediate diploma in composition (avant-garde, classical) at the Hochschule für Musik und Theater in Rostock.
